This story begins with a dog。 It ends with getting the whole community involved。 I read this with a 3 1/2 year old。 She pointed at all the things she recognized with excitement。 There are several lines on each page (sometimes more) describing the sleuth like details。 Kids who can read by themselves will enjoy it too。

Great rhyme and rhythm。 Easy and quick read for toddlers through elementary school。

a sweet book about being kind and understanding。

I love this book, as does my two year old。 It has a wonderful performative rhythm to it, and Sara Ogilvie's illustrations are gorgeous, and detailed enough for children of all ages to pick out features for their learning across the curriculum。Julia Donaldson mixes up the sentence structures throughout the book, giving LOs around cohesion and authorial method。 There are many instances of alliteration, repetition and a mix of tenses to investigate also。But central to the story is the theme of righ I love this book, as does my two year old。 It has a wonderful performative rhythm to it, and Sara Ogilvie's illustrations are gorgeous, and detailed enough for children of all ages to pick out features for their learning across the curriculum。Julia Donaldson mixes up the sentence structures throughout the book, giving LOs around cohesion and authorial method。 There are many instances of alliteration, repetition and a mix of tenses to investigate also。But central to the story is the theme of right and wrong, forgiveness, kindness and redemption which children of all ages can understand。 And。 more discretely, Donaldson has subtly sewn the love of books into the narrative: the luminous library and colourful classroom end the picture book with a happy teacher, happy pupils and a happy dog。(Dad and daughter are happy readers too)。 。。。more

。。。more

Dogs that children read to, someone learning to borrow books from the library, a forgetful child - it’s lovely。 Madeleine’s favourite part was when the books got stolen。

I will start by saying I *love* Donaldson's writing, rhyming and rhythm。 And I love a good dog book。 And my kids really loved it。 My one issue with this one is the "thief" why is he pictured the way that he is? How can he be an adult that can read, but not have heard of or know of the library until the kids swoop in and save the day? Why would he only steal from a children's school library? Maybe I'm thinking too hard about a children's book, but the whole thing made me uncomfortable。 I will start by saying I *love* Donaldson's writing, rhyming and rhythm。 And I love a good dog book。 And my kids really loved it。 My one issue with this one is the "thief" why is he pictured the way that he is? A cute book about a dog who sniffs out a thief。 Rhyming and meter are good。 <<(view spoiler)[>>I was a little creeped out that a strange man has broken into a school classroom and stolen all the kids' books and that they track him to an abandoned area, but if you can ignore that, it's a good book。 (hide spoiler)] A cute book about a dog who sniffs out a thief。 Rhyming and meter are good。 <<(view spoiler)[>>I was a little creeped out that a strange man has broken into a school classroom and stolen all the kids' books and that they track him to an abandoned area, but if you can ignore that, it's a good book。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Our family is BIG fan of Julia Donaldson。 Her books are always fun to read, mostly written in rhyme, with whimsical storylines that make us giggle and smile。 This is another one of our favourites。 My 4-year-old boy is a bit apprehensive whenever there is a story involving “bad person”。 This book has a thief, but (spoiler alert), he is not a horrible scary thief。 In fact, he is a loveable one who loves to read。 My boy is happy with this。 The story started off with Detective Dog Nell’s habits of s Our family is BIG fan of Julia Donaldson。 Her books are always fun to read, mostly written in rhyme, with whimsical storylines that make us giggle and smile。 This is another one of our favourites。 My 4-year-old boy is a bit apprehensive whenever there is a story involving “bad person”。 This book has a thief, but (spoiler alert), he is not a horrible scary thief。 In fact, he is a loveable one who loves to read。 My boy is happy with this。 The story started off with Detective Dog Nell’s habits of solving crime after crime on daily basis; from discovering the real culprit who “threw the hazelnuts down from the tree”, to the one who “took the honey away from the bees”。 Its detection work had a pause every Monday, where the dog would set off to school with Peter where she heard children read。 Then came one day where Detective Dog Nell arrived to school just to find that all the books have gone。 There began a real detective works to search for the “books thief” where school students and teacher ran after Nell to track down their stolen books。 I love the part where the kids ran past the farm, and the zoo, and the takeaway shop, and ran through a field and the golf course then into the wood。 My 20-month-old excitedly pointed at all the interesting animals illustrated: there were giraffe, elephant, pig, bird, gorilla, crocodile, hippopotamus, lion and bear curiously watching the kids ran in a line following the good old dog。 (Spoiler Alert) The kids finally found the “thief” hiding behind the wooden fence, burying his nose under the pile of books, reading。 This was the part that made us smile。 “I’m sorry” “I know I’ve been bad, stealing is wrong - but I just meant to borrow。 I was planning to give all the books back tomorrow。” I love the ending where the dog and kids led the “thief” to a library with thousands of books, where “you can join。。。。 there isn’t a fee, and then you can take lots of books out for free。”。 Our family is library lovers, so the picture of a library with tons of books makes us smile and both the kids went “wow”。 As per the usual Julia Donaldson’s style, the book rhymes throughout the story。 It is fun to read, and both the kids love listening to it。 The illustrations are lovely and fantastic and full of actions。 I like this book and would recommend any kid to have a read。 https://storypleasemummy。wordpress。com 。。。more

This would be a great mystery book for students that are 1st through 3rd grade。 Nell is the best fictional dog that goes to school every Monday with his owner to listen to kids read。 One day, the books went missing so Nell took the class on a hunt to find out where they were。 They finally found the thief and he wanted to borrow the books, he did not mean to steal them。 After Nell heard the thief mention he only wanted to borrow the books to read, he had an idea! Nell lead the class to the library and introduced Ted (the thief) to the wonderful world of library books! He was told he could choose any book to borrow and was able to understand and learn about the library! WOW! Nell is the best detective dog! This book would be great for predicting what will happen and has many rhyming words。 This would be great and easy for students to use for sequencing events。 There are many activities you could use with this book for students。 Some students may have never been to a library before so this would be a great time for that discussion。 I love that the illustrations are on the majority of the pages! This helps students really see the details and be "involved" in the story! Dogs are my favorite and just learning how important Nell thinks reading is for students is awesome! Students would really love this book as they learn the importance of reading。 This could also be a great discussion for students on why Nell is reading with students。 He could be a support dog and students could learn about therapy dogs! 。。。more

Detective Dog Nell is great at tracking down lost things。 She goes into school on a Monday to listen to children read (what a fab idea?!) and even as a dog she appears to be very enthusiastic about all the books and everything they can offer。 Except one day the school is empty and all the books are gone! This is a beautiful children’s book with a lovely message。 I love Julia Donaldson’s work, it’s incredibly enjoyable to read aloud and my class loved it when I read to them。 A great pick to help children bask in the wonder of having access to good books。

Children will love following the adventure and there are lots of opportunities for exciting discussions and questions a long the way。 We can especially encourage predictions, reasoning and using the text/illustrations to gain information about the story。 I particularly love this story as it celebrates having a passion for reading and shows how exciting books can be, telling stories about everything from knights to meteorites。 The book also encompasses other amazing themes that could be used throughout the classroom including the senses (of course!) and how dogs can support children in their learning environment。 The Detective Dog, again, has a rhythmic rhyming structure that will maintain the children’s interest in the story alongside the vivid and inspiring illustrations by Sara Ogilvie。 。。。more
